Become an ESL or GED Tutor
Volunteer Today
Adult Literacy Volunteer tutors support our Adult Education program by serving as tutors providing one-on-one or group instruction in reading, writing and speaking the English language. The learners are enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED classes.
Volunteers teach on a day and time that is convenient for them. Morning and evening assignments are available, Monday through Friday. Flexible scheduling allows both working and retired people the opportunity to share their time and talent.
Literacy volunteers receive specialized training in helping adults learn how to read and have access to resource materials, as well as support and advice, as they develop their skills as a literacy tutor.
The Black Hawk College Adult Literacy Program serves the lifelong learners of the Black Hawk College District including Rock Island, Henry and Mercer countries and parts of six other surrounding counties.
To qualify for a tutor: Adult learners must be an adult age 17 or older not currently enrolled in school and must read, write, compute or comprehend below the ninth-grade level on an accepted test.
For the purpose of compliance with Section 511 of Public Law 101-166 (Stevens Amendment), approximately 39% ($377,444) of FY24 Black Hawk College Adult Education and Literacy funding comes from federal resources.
